Tecmo Super Bowl

My second review for the NES is a game that you'll find almost no argument as being one of the greatest football games ever created. When this game came out it was amazing and everybody was talking about it. To this day it still stands out as a excellent game of football due to its simplicity and it's just downright fun to play. So how will I go about covering this game you ask? Well the answer is you get to see me go through a entire season and see if I have the mad skills to win the big game at the end (ie. The Super Bowl). Yep the coverage of this game depends on how well I perform, now just think of the incredible pressure this creates for me! Also since this whole site is a one man job kind of deal I have to manage snagging screen shots and playing the game at the same time. Quite a challenging task for even the best gamer (which I don't claim to be actually). I bet you are wondering what team I'll select for my season then huh? Well I'm going with the team I generally always played as and that's the Atlanta Falcons! They've really never let me down much. They were also a pretty popular team at the time as well, so hey forgive me for liking something popular. The team has a pretty solid run attack and deadly recievers. The deadlist reciever being the guy you never heard of, I speak of Shawn Collins. This guy catches just about anything thrown at him that is in bounds. I was so fascinated by his abilities in this game that at the time I wanted to see how good he was in the real thing. I guess the reason why he was never known is that he really wasn't a good player in the NFL. I think he had like one decent season then a bad one and that was the end of him. Yet in the game he is as good as Jerry Rice, funny eh? About the only weak spot on the Falcons is their Quarterback position. Chris Miller and Hugh Millen are some pretty crappy quarterbacks. Miller gets injured all the time and Millen just often performs poorly when asked to take over Miller's place. It should be interesting to see how they perform this season. On defense they have no other than Prime Time himself, yes I refer to Deion Sanders! These were definitely his glory years. Now if you don't give a damn about football you probably didn't care about any of that. Then again you did click on a review of a football game, so it's your fault then heh let's start the season!

Ah it's the first game of season and you should always select to kick off no matter what.

I'm going to go off on a small rant here this a warning, so if you would like to skip it you can. I made it real easy for you. Hey aren't I thoughtful? *[rant begin] What I don't understand is why anyone in their right mind would choose to recieve the ball first, yet in the NFL it is assumed that the team that wins the toss wants the ball first. All I want to know is why is this dumb decision made!? Does it really matter who scores first? Of course not! The smart thing to do is to kick the ball off the first half knowing that your team is going to start the second half off with the ball. That is obviously the more important half. Kicking off at the start of the first half is also a very strategic move as you can score just before the first half ends and then know the ball will be given right back to your team to begin the second half. It's funny since the computer was programmed to select to recieve the ball every time it wins the toss, I kick no matter what. When I play friends though they often choose to kick first. I think they do it mostly to just piss me off, but I believe they see the logic in it. [rant end]* One of the things this game was known for was it's cool cinematic screens. As can be seen on the left. These are spread throughout the game and play at certain moments. They add extra excitement to the game and are rather nice to look at. Now we have FMV in games which basically evolved off of this idea. Sure FMV is nice, but this is where it's at. We really don't need FMV in games.
